Hermit Island Camping Trip

We made our eighth annual boys' birthday camping trip pilgrimage to Hermit Island over Memorial Day weekend.

Usually we go the weekend prior to Memorial Day, to avoid the crowds (and get off-season rates).

But our schedule didn't allow for that this year.

It turns out there's a good reason everyone goes camping Memorial Day weekend--that extra day makes all the difference.

And it turns out it wasn't that crowded at all.

We had incredible, sunny weather (usually in May we get anywhere from a little to a lot of rain).

Although it was a little chilly when the temps dipped into the 30s Friday night (especially since E and I were sharing a sleeping bag because we somehow managed to forget one bag).

There's something really wonderful about going to the same place year after year.

Layering new traditions on top of old.

(Like gingersnap-nutella smores)

Observing the changes in your family in relief against the backdrop of an unchanging land.

And still the wonder is there, the excitement, the "why haven't you guys packed the car yet I'm ready to go camping now" energy.

We went camping over Memorial Day weekend. And it was good.

  2. Sounds just perfect. And I have to say, I love that you hung a bunting at your campsite :) I am so doing that next time we go camping.

  4. Wow! It looks like you had a wonderful weekend camping! And I agree with your take on going to the same spot many times...it leads to connections that perhaps would not otherwise happen.
